"Currently, Jeonbuk needs to adapt to changes in crops due to the climate crisis, transitioning from rice farming to alternative crops like leafy greens or legumes, " stated Lee Gwi-jae, a professor from the Department of Biotechnology at Jeonbuk National University, during a forum on "Crisis in Rural Areas and Strategies for Jeonbuk's Development" held on the 14th.
Professor Lee emphasized that "rice farming produces methane gas during the decomposition of organic matter underwater, contributing to global warming. This could negatively impact farmers' income if a carbon tax is introduced in the future."
He added, "While the national average ratio of paddy fields to dry fields is 51:49, in Jeonbuk, the ratio is 68:32, indicating the need to increase the proportion of dry fields." He also noted, "There is a need to increase the production of crops like soybeans, which are currently being imported, to prepare for the growth of the alternative meat market.“ (continue)
